CP82C54 - Renesas Electronics

Description: The Intersil 82C54 is a high performance CMOS Programmable Interval Timer manufactured using an advanced 2 micron CMOS process. The 82C54 has three independently programmable and functional 16-bit counters, each capable of handling clock input frequencies of up to 8MHz (82C54) or 10MHz (82C54-10) or 12MHz (82C54-12). The High-Speed and industry standard configuration of the 82C54 make it compatible with the Intersil 80C86, 80C88, and 80C286 CMOS microprocessors along with many other industry standard proces

CP82C54 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  • The maximum frequency of the clock input is 10 MHz, but it can be as high as 12 MHz with a 5V power supply and a duty cycle of 50%.
  • The timer can be reset by setting the RESET pin high for at least 2 clock cycles. This will reset the counters and the control registers.
  • The GATE input is used to enable or disable the counting of the timer. When GATE is low, the timer is disabled and the counters do not increment. When GATE is high, the timer is enabled and the counters increment based on the clock input.
  • In mode 0, the timer generates an interrupt when the counter reaches zero. To use this mode, set the mode control register to 0, load the counter with the desired value, and enable the timer. When the counter reaches zero, an interrupt will be generated.
  • The OUT pin is an active low output that goes low when the counter reaches zero. The OUT_LINE pin is an active high output that goes high when the counter reaches zero. The OUT_LINE pin is used in mode 2 (rate generator) and mode 3 (square wave generator).
