HMC598 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  • The recommended power-on sequence is to apply VDD first, followed by VDDIO, and then the clock signal. This ensures proper initialization of the device.
  • To enter sleep mode, set the Mode register (0x02) to 0x01. To wake up, set the Mode register to 0x00. Note that the device will automatically enter sleep mode if no data is read from the device for 100ms.
  • The DRDY (Data Ready) pin is an output that goes high when new data is available in the data registers. It can be used to interrupt the microcontroller to read the data.
  • The magnetic field strength in Gauss can be calculated using the sensitivity scale factor (SF) and the raw sensor data (OUT_X, OUT_Y, OUT_Z). The formula is: B = (OUT_X * SF, OUT_Y * SF, OUT_Z * SF). The SF value depends on the gain setting and can be found in the datasheet.
  • To minimize noise and interference, place the HMC5983 away from high-current carrying traces and components. Use a ground plane under the device and keep the signal traces short and shielded. Follow the recommended land pattern and keep the device orientation consistent with the magnetic field direction.
