MAX31855KASA+ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  • A 4-layer PCB with a solid ground plane and a separate analog ground plane is recommended. Keep the analog and digital grounds separate and connect them at a single point. Use a star topology for the power supply and keep the thermocouple wires away from the digital signals.
  • Calibration is not required for the MAX31855KASA+, as it is a plug-and-play device. However, you can perform a self-calibration by connecting the thermocouple to the device and allowing it to auto-calibrate. This process takes around 30 seconds.
  • The maximum length of the thermocouple wire depends on the type of thermocouple and the noise environment. As a general rule, keep the thermocouple wire as short as possible (less than 10 feet) to minimize noise pickup. Use a shielded cable and twist the wires together to reduce electromagnetic interference.
  • The MAX31855KASA+ is designed to work with K-type thermocouples. While it may be possible to use it with other thermocouple types, the accuracy and performance may not be guaranteed. Consult the datasheet and application notes for more information.
