Richtek provides a recommended PCB layout in their application note AN033, which includes guidelines for thermal vias, copper pours, and component placement to minimize thermal resistance and ensure reliable operation.
The output capacitor selection depends on the output voltage, output current, and desired ripple voltage. Richtek recommends using a low-ESR capacitor with a value between 10uF to 22uF, and a voltage rating of at least 2x the output voltage. Additionally, the capacitor's ripple current rating should be greater than the output current.
Although the datasheet specifies a maximum input voltage of 18V, Richtek recommends limiting the input voltage to 15V to ensure reliable operation and prevent damage to the internal components.
The RT8231CGQW has a built-in overcurrent protection feature that can be enabled by connecting a resistor between the OCP pin and GND. The resistor value determines the overcurrent threshold. Richtek provides a calculation formula for the resistor value in their datasheet.
Richtek recommends using a ceramic or film capacitor with a value between 1uF to 10uF, and a voltage rating of at least 2x the input voltage. The input capacitor helps to filter out noise and reduce the input voltage ripple.
