XP Power recommends a PCB layout with a large copper area connected to the tab of the device to dissipate heat effectively. A minimum of 1 square inch of copper is recommended, and the use of thermal vias can further improve heat dissipation.
To ensure reliable start-up, XP Power recommends a soft-start circuit to limit the inrush current during power-on. Additionally, a sufficient input capacitance (e.g., 10uF) should be used to filter out input voltage ripple and noise.
The maximum allowed capacitance on the output of the STR05S05 is 10uF. Exceeding this value may cause instability or oscillation in the converter.
While the STR05S05 is rated for operation up to 85°C, XP Power recommends derating the output power by 2.5% per degree above 70°C to ensure reliable operation. Additionally, the device should be mounted on a heat sink to dissipate heat effectively.
