  • A 4-layer PCB with a solid ground plane and a separate power plane is recommended. Keep the analog and digital grounds separate and connect them at a single point. Use short, direct traces for the RS-485 bus and keep them away from noise sources.
  • Use shielded cables, twisted pairs, and a common-mode choke to reduce electromagnetic interference (EMI). Implement error-checking mechanisms, such as CRC or checksum, to detect data corruption. Consider using a repeater or isolator to extend the transmission distance.
  • The maximum cable length depends on the data rate, cable quality, and noise environment. As a general guideline, the ISL3159EIUZ can support cable lengths up to 4000 feet (1219 meters) at 115.2 kbps. However, it's recommended to perform signal integrity analysis and testing to determine the maximum cable length for a specific application.
  • The ISL3159EIUZ is a half-duplex transceiver by default. To configure it for full-duplex operation, connect the DE (driver enable) pin to VCC and the RE (receiver enable) pin to GND. For half-duplex operation, connect DE to the transmit enable signal and RE to the receive enable signal.
  • A 120-ohm termination resistor is recommended at the far end of the RS-485 bus to prevent signal reflections. The termination resistor should be connected between the A and B lines. Additionally, a 1-kohm pull-up resistor to VCC can be used on the DE pin to ensure the driver is enabled during transmission.
