UC2856N Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  • The UC2856N is a high-frequency switching regulator, and proper PCB layout is crucial for its operation. TI recommends a 4-layer PCB with a solid ground plane, and the use of vias to connect the top and bottom layers. The input and output capacitors should be placed close to the IC, and the feedback network should be routed away from the switching node. A detailed layout guide is available in the TI application note SLUA121.
  • The inductor selection depends on the output voltage, current, and switching frequency. TI recommends using an inductor with a low DC resistance, high saturation current, and a suitable inductance value. The inductance value can be calculated using the formula: L = (Vin - Vout) / (f_sw * ΔI), where Vin is the input voltage, Vout is the output voltage, f_sw is the switching frequency, and ΔI is the peak-to-peak inductor current. A list of recommended inductors is available in the TI datasheet.
  • The maximum junction temperature of the UC2856N is 150°C. However, it's recommended to keep the junction temperature below 125°C for reliable operation and to prevent thermal shutdown. The junction temperature can be estimated using the formula: Tj = Ta + (Pd * Rθja), where Ta is the ambient temperature, Pd is the power dissipation, and Rθja is the thermal resistance from junction to ambient.
  • The UC2856N requires a compensation network to ensure stability. The compensation network consists of a resistor and a capacitor connected between the COMP pin and the GND pin. The values of the resistor and capacitor depend on the output voltage, output current, and switching frequency. TI provides a compensation calculator tool to help designers determine the correct values. A detailed compensation guide is available in the TI application note SLUA122.
  • The soft-start time of the UC2856N is approximately 1.5 ms. This is the time it takes for the output voltage to ramp up to its final value after the EN pin is pulled high. The soft-start time can be adjusted by adding an external capacitor between the SS pin and the GND pin.
