The Analog Devices TMCM-3216 is a three-axis stepper motor controller and driver module that integrates motion control and drive electronics on a compact 85 × 55 mm board. It operates from a single 10 V to 30 V supply and provides up to 1.5 A RMS (2 A peak) per phase. Each of the three axes includes inputs for reference and stop switches as well as A/B/N incremental encoders, which allow implementation of open-loop or closed-loop stepper control depending on system requirements.
Control is handled by an onboard ARM Cortex-M4 microcontroller, which executes motion profiles and manages communication. The module can be programmed using TMCL (Trinamic Motion Control Language) through the TMCL-IDE development environment, or supplied with firmware that supports CANopen for integration into fieldbus systems. This architecture allows the same hardware to be used in both standalone and networked automation environments.
The driver stages support several current control methods developed by Trinamic. StealthChop provides low-noise motor operation at low speeds, while SpreadCycle is used for more dynamic current regulation during higher load conditions. CoolStep adapts the motor current in response to actual load, improving electrical efficiency and reducing heating. StallGuard2/4 offers sensorless stall detection, allowing the controller to estimate load conditions without additional external sensors. An eight-point motion ramp generator is included to manage acceleration and deceleration profiles in hardware.
Interfaces include USB, RS-485, and CAN, with support for daisy-chain configurations and automatic addressing. In addition to motor control functions, the board provides four programmable digital I/Os and two analog inputs for system integration. These features enable the TMCM-3216 to serve as a multi-axis motion module for applications such as laboratory automation, robotics, or small-scale industrial equipment where moderate current levels and compact size are suitable.
