A5990GEVSR-T Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  • Allegro recommends a 2-layer PCB with a solid ground plane on the bottom layer and a thermal relief pattern on the top layer to minimize thermal resistance. A minimum of 2 oz copper thickness is recommended for the PCB.
  • To ensure accurate current sensing, it's essential to follow proper PCB layout and routing guidelines, including keeping the sense lines short and away from noise sources, and using a low-impedance path for the sense lines. Additionally, calibrate the device during production to account for any manufacturing variations.
  • The maximum allowed voltage on the VREG pin is 5.5V. Exceeding this voltage can damage the device. It's recommended to use a voltage regulator or a Zener diode to limit the voltage to 5V or less.
  • While the A5990 is designed to operate up to 100 kHz, it's possible to use it with higher switching frequencies. However, this may require additional filtering and noise reduction measures to ensure accurate current sensing and prevent electromagnetic interference (EMI). Consult with Allegro's application engineers for guidance on high-frequency operation.
  • During power-up, the A5990's output may exhibit a brief period of instability. To handle this, use a power-on reset (POR) circuit or a soft-start circuit to ensure a clean power-up sequence. During power-down, the output will decay slowly; use a pull-down resistor or a discharge circuit to quickly discharge the output capacitor.
