Richtek provides a recommended PCB layout in their application note AND9234, which includes guidelines for thermal vias, copper pours, and component placement to minimize thermal resistance and ensure reliable operation.
The output capacitor selection depends on the output voltage, output current, and desired ripple voltage. Richtek recommends using a low-ESR capacitor with a minimum capacitance of 10uF and a voltage rating of at least 1.5 times the output voltage. A X5R or X7R dielectric capacitor is recommended for its low ESR and high reliability.
Although the datasheet specifies a maximum input voltage of 18V, it's recommended to limit the input voltage to 15V to ensure reliable operation and prevent damage to the internal components.
The RT9742VGJ5 has a built-in overcurrent protection feature that limits the output current to 2.5A. However, if additional protection is required, an external current sense resistor can be used to monitor the output current and trigger a shutdown signal to the EN pin in case of an overcurrent event.
Richtek recommends using a 1uF to 10uF ceramic capacitor with a voltage rating of at least 1.5 times the input voltage. A X5R or X7R dielectric capacitor is recommended for its low ESR and high reliability. The input capacitor should be placed as close as possible to the VIN pin to minimize noise and ripple.
