A 4-layer PCB with a solid ground plane and a separate power plane is recommended. Keep the analog and digital grounds separate and connect them at a single point. Use a 10uF capacitor between VCC and GND, and a 100nF capacitor between VCC and AVCC.
Use a shielded cable for the RS-232 connection, and consider using a common-mode choke or ferrite bead to filter out electromagnetic interference (EMI). Also, ensure that the transmitter and receiver are properly terminated.
The maximum cable length depends on the baud rate and cable quality. As a general guideline, the maximum cable length is 50 feet (15.24 meters) at 9600 bps, 20 feet (6.1 meters) at 19,200 bps, and 10 feet (3.05 meters) at 38,400 bps.
The POR and BOR features are enabled by default. To disable them, tie the POR and BOR pins to VCC. To use them, connect the POR pin to a capacitor to set the reset timeout, and connect the BOR pin to a voltage divider to set the brown-out detection threshold.
The SP3220EUEY-L/TR has a maximum junction temperature of 150°C. Ensure good airflow around the device, and consider using a heat sink if the device is expected to operate in high-temperature environments.
