STPM801 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  • STMicroelectronics recommends a 2-layer or 4-layer PCB with a thermal pad connected to a large copper area on the bottom layer to dissipate heat efficiently. A minimum of 1 oz copper thickness is recommended.
  • To ensure accurate current measurement, use a low-impedance current sense resistor (RSENSE) and place it as close as possible to the STPM801. Also, use a Kelvin connection to the sense resistor to minimize parasitic resistance and inductance.
  • Although the datasheet specifies a maximum VCC voltage of 5.5V, it's recommended to limit the voltage to 5V to ensure reliable operation and prevent damage to the device.
  • The STPM801 has built-in OCP and OVP features. For OCP, set the OCP threshold using the ITRIP pin and ensure the sense resistor is properly sized. For OVP, use an external voltage supervisor or a Zener diode to clamp the input voltage to a safe level.
  • A ceramic capacitor with a value of 10uF to 22uF is recommended for the input capacitor. A low-ESR capacitor, such as an X5R or X7R type, is preferred to minimize voltage ripple and ensure stable operation.
