UCN5804B Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  • A good PCB layout practice is to keep the high-current paths short and away from sensitive analog circuits. Use a solid ground plane and keep the motor driver IC close to the motor terminals. Additionally, use a common mode choke or ferrite bead to filter the motor current.
  • Use a flyback diode (e.g., 1N4007) across the motor terminals to absorb the back-EMF. You can also add a capacitor (e.g., 100nF) in parallel with the diode to filter out high-frequency noise.
  • The maximum allowable voltage drop is approximately 2V, depending on the motor current and supply voltage. Exceeding this limit may cause the IC to overheat or malfunction.
  • Choose a sense resistor value that provides a voltage drop of 0.5V to 1V at the maximum motor current. Use the formula: Rsense = (Vref / Imax) * (Rint / Rext), where Vref is the reference voltage, Imax is the maximum motor current, Rint is the internal sense resistor, and Rext is the external sense resistor.
  • The VREF pin provides a 2.5V reference voltage for the internal voltage regulator and current sense amplifier. Connect a 10kΩ resistor from VREF to GND to enable the internal voltage regulator. You can also use VREF as a reference for external circuits.
