The input capacitor should have a low ESR and be rated for the maximum input voltage. The output capacitor should have a low ESR and be rated for the maximum output voltage. A good starting point is to use X5R or X7R ceramic capacitors with a capacitance value of 10uF to 22uF for both input and output.
